Corrianne van Velze is a hand therapist with over 35 years of experience in the treatment of upper limb injuries and conditions. She treats patients of all ages and enjoys the challenges of treating all types of injuries. Her mission is to make a positive difference to all of her patients, no matter what their condition.

DSC_0156-verwerkCorrianne qualified as an occupational therapist at the University of Stellenbosch in 1976. She obtained her B.Occ Ther (Honours) degree through the University of Pretoria and then went on to receive her Masters degree in Occupational Therapy at the University of the Witwatersrand. She has extensive clinical experience in South Africa and worked as a clinician and occupational therapy manager for many years. She also worked in the Netherlands for two years and in the United Kingdom for one year in the early eighties. She started her private practice in hand therapy on a part-time basis in 1987 and then changed to full-time private practice in 1992.

She is experienced in the use of activities in hand therapy, which belies her occupational therapy background and is especially interested in how therapists can use every day tools and activities to gain the patient’s interest and participation. She believes that basic knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics and pathology remain the basis of therapy. This knowledge, combined with sound clinical reasoning, a good grasp of treatment modalities, including splinting, ensure a good outcome for the patient.

Corrianne is well-known internationally and has served on the executive committee of the International Federation of Societies for Hand Therapy (IFSHT) for 15 years. She was President of this Federation for three years from 1998 to 2001. She is a past President of the South African Society of Hand Therapists and continues to serve the organisation in a consultative capacity.

Corrianne is a generous teacher who loves to share her knowledge and skill with other therapists. She has a passion for excellence and makes it her mission to train the best hand therapists in South Africa. She is the coordinator and main lecturer of the Post Graduate Diploma in Hand Therapy course which is offered by the University of Pretoria every two years. This programme has been presented seven times since 2001. Over 150 therapists have completed the course. Most of these therapists are working in the field of hand therapy, not only in South Africa, but also internationally, where they have received generous praise for their knowledge and skill.

She is a part-time lecturer at the Occupational Therapy department of the University of Pretoria. Besides coordinating the Post Graduate Diploma programme, she is also supervisor for masters students in the field of hand therapy.

Corrianne is frequently asked to teach short courses in hand therapy in different cities and towns in South Africa and has taught a number of courses in other countries. These include:
